Strength at Any Age

CategoriesUncategorized

Discovering confidence, community, and strength at 78 years old

Staying active looks different at every stage of life, but building strength is important as you age. Carol was uncertain about joining the Iron People group exercise program, unsure if a class focused on weight training was right for her. What she found was a supportive environment that helped her feel stronger, move more easily, and discover just how capable she was at 78 years old.

“Your first day in Iron People, what did you think?” Laguna Niguel Family YMCA personal trainer, Bobby, asked.

“I thought, ‘Oh my God. Can I do this?’”

With her hair dyed purple and blue, and a laugh that comes easily, Carol Tanaka carries herself in a way that makes her age hard to guess, and at 78 years old, she is not letting her age stop her from trying something new: weight training.

Before stepping into weight training, Carol already had a strong routine. For over a year, she had been attending the YMCA’s Active Older Adults (AOA) class at 7:30 a.m., five days a week. Though the idea of taking Iron People, a class focused entirely on weights, still felt outside her comfort zone.

But she didn’t let that uncertainty stop her.

With her trainer Bobby’s guidance, Carol quickly began to notice changes, not just in the gym, but in her everyday life.

“It’s very good for my body,” Carol said. “I noticed it right away. I’m not as tired, and I feel more energetic in the mornings.”

She can do things now that she couldn’t do before. Simple movements became easier. Getting in and out of the car felt more manageable.

And her results backed it up. After just two months of strength training, Carol had gained 3.5 pounds of muscle and lost nearly six pounds of fat! Carol was shocked. Bobby was impressed.

“Carol is amazing,” Bobby shared. “She’s strong, she keeps coming in, and she enjoys it.”

She’s a reminder that strength training isn’t about age or experience; it’s about showing up, finding the right support, and believing that progress is possible at any stage of life. At the YMCA of Orange County, members like Carol prove every day that strength, confidence, and community have no age limit.

The work isn’t always easy—but it’s worth it.

“It’s hard,” Carol says with a smile. “But sometimes you just have to do it.”
