175 Years of Making Summers Matter
The YMCA of Orange County is building champions through connection, confidence, and character.
For 175 years, the YMCA has helped families turn summer into something meaningful, creating experiences that stay with children long after camp ends. Here in Orange County, that tradition continues as we inspire the next generation of champions, nurturing the whole child in mind, body, and spirit.
Summer – the time when children get to be children. Free from school, homework, and many of the daily expectations that come with it. The first few days feel like pure freedom. But the thing about summer is, there's a lot of hours to fill. Parents often still have to work, friends don’t always live nearby, and even the most exciting activities can only entertain someone for so long. Without structured activities or regular adult supervision, children can feel isolated, spend too much time on screens, or experience the “summer slide” and lose progress in their learning.
For 175 years, the YMCA has been a trusted place where children can spend their summers learning, growing, and having fun in a safe and supportive environment. Generation after generation, families have turned to the YMCA not just for childcare, but for experiences that help children discover who they are and who they can become.
At the YMCA of Orange County, our goal is to create “Champions in the Making,” reflecting our commitment to nurturing the whole child: mind, body, and spirit. Through engaging field trips, hands-on experiments, healthy eating activities, and plenty of outdoor play, our camp curriculum is intentionally designed to help children build confidence, resilience, and joy. Every day offers opportunities for campers to move their bodies, challenge their thinking, and connect with others in meaningful ways.
A key focus of this summer’s program is social-emotional learning, an essential part of helping children thrive both in and out of the classroom. Campers will be introduced to CASEL’s five Social Emotional Learning competencies:
- Self-Awareness: Activities like journaling and morning “Feelings Forecast” check-ins help campers reflect on and describe their emotions.
- Self-Management: Goal-setting challenges teaches responsibility, while mindfulness games help campers practice focus and self-control through play.
- Social Awareness: Community service projects encourage campers to care for others and see the world from different perspectives.
- Relationship Skills: Team challenges and group projects help campers practice communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution.
- Responsible Decision-Making: Planning activities such as camp “Shark Tank” allows campers to have a say in their programs, practice leadership, and make thoughtful choices.
These skills are woven naturally into daily camp experiences, helping children grow into confident, compassionate, and capable individuals.
At the YMCA of Orange County, we believe learning goes far beyond academics. Our goal is to help children develop the tools they need to navigate life with confidence and compassion. By expanding learning beyond traditional subjects, we empower campers to build self-assurance, strengthen their coping skills, and grow into caring, capable people.
Summer may be long, but it’s also full of possibility. With a 175-year legacy of impact, the YMCA is proud to be a place where champions are truly made.
